FedEx Reconfigures System for Direct Narita-Beijing, Narita-Shanghai Flights

~Enhancing service between two leading Asian economies~

HONG KONG, April 19, 2002 - FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, has configured its existing service to include direct flights between Narita and Beijing and Shanghai. Specifically, the changes involve three routes: from Narita to Beijing, from Narita to Shanghai, and from Beijing to Narita. These flights enable FedEx to strengthen services with faster, more reliable service between Japan and China.

There will be ten direct flights on the Narita-Beijing and Narita-Shanghai routes, with a daily flight to each city Monday through Friday. FedEx will operate its MD-11 aircraft on each of the routes.

As a result of these enhancements, FedEx is able to improve service to Beijing and Shanghai, China's two major distribution points. The flights follow the expansion of that country's distribution needs following its entry to the WTO. "The opening of these new routes creates a closer trade link between two engines of global commerce, Japan and China," says David L. Cunningham, President of FedEx Asia Pacific. "Given our leadership in the Asia Pacific region, we have an obligation to the customers who depend on FedEx to meet their needs for improved service between two of the leading economies in the region. The new network configuration not only makes the FedEx flight system more efficient, but also enables us to provide customers with the most rapid and reliable express transportation service between Japan, China and the rest of the world."

China, which has enjoyed annual economic growth of over 7% for the past decade, represents an enormous market with inexpensive labor costs for companies from a wide range of industries in Japan and Asia Pacific. In the fast-evolving markets for information technology-related and high value-added manufactured goods, speed to market is crucial to remaining competitive. Demand for the air cargo services that make such prompt delivery possible is therefore growing between Japan and China.

FedEx currently provides its services in 202 cities in China. FedEx began flying between Shanghai and Anchorage in April of last year, and in October it further strengthened its operation in China by opening its FedEx-DTW Express Center at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the largest distribution center in the country.

FedEx Express began operations in Japan in 1984. Since starting overnight service between Tokyo and the U.S., the company has gradually expanded its service network to cover Osaka and Nagoya, and now provides delivery service with its own flights through both New Tokyo International Airport (NRT) and Kansai International Airport (KIX) to the U.S. In 1995, FedEx opened its Asia Pacific Hub in Subic Bay, the Philippines, and launched FedEx AsiaOne®, its new intra-Asia overnight delivery network connecting major commercial and financial centers in the region. FedEx Japan currently has 1,600 employees, 50 drop-off locations including 6 fully staffed FedEx World Service Centers, 8 FedEx Authorized ShipCenters, 22 Drop Boxes and 18 Stations nationwide.

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., connects areas that generate 90% of the world's gross domestic product in 24-48 hours with door-to-door and customs-cleared service. The company's unmatched air route authorities and infrastructure make it the world's largest express transportation company, providing fast, reliable and time-definite transportation to 211 countries each working day. FedEx employs approximately 143,500 employees and has more than 50,000 drop-off locations, 640 aircraft and 45,000 vehicles in its integrated global network.

With annual revenues of $20 billion, FedEx Corp. is the premier global provider of transportation, e-commerce and supply chain management services. The company offers integrated business solutions through a network of subsidiaries operating independently, including FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company; FedEx Ground, North America's second largest provider of small-package ground delivery service; FedEx Freight, the largest U.S. provider of regional less-than-truckload freight services; FedEx Custom Critical, the world's largest provider of expedited time-critical shipments; and FedEx Trade Networks, a provider of customs clearance, international freight forwarding and trade facilitation.
