FedEx Links Australia and East Timor Schools in Friendship Program

Sydney, AUSTRALIA - October 23, 2003 - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today announced a one year sponsorship agreement as a major sponsor of the East Timor Friendship School Project.

The East Timor Friendship School Project is managed by the Alola Foundation and CARE East Timor. The project enables some 3,500 Australian and East Timorese school children from 34 schools to exchange information, knowledge and learnings about each others culture and community.

As a major sponsor, FedEx will carry nearly 700 kilograms of parcels containing books, drawings, artwork and letters produced by 17 schools in Australia and 17 schools in East Timor.

Mr Rhicke Jennings, Managing Director of FedEx Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands said, "FedEx cares about the communities in which we live and work. We are committed to nurturing school children in Australia and around the world through programs like the Friendship School Project to broaden their knowledge of the world."

The first East Timor Friendship School Project linkup between an Australian and East Timor school was launched today in Victoria at the Williamstown North Primary School by the Premiere of Victoria, Steve Bracks and his wife, Terry Bracks. Mrs. Bracks is a co-chair of the Friendship School Project together with Kirsty Sword-Gusmao, Director of the Alola Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Bracks will complete the first link of this project by personally delivering a package from Williamstown North Primary school to Hun Buti Tibar Community School in East Timor next week.

[quote to be approved by Alola] Ms Kirsty Sword-Gusmao, Director of the Alola Foundation said, "The Alola Foundation is delighted with the assistance FedEx is providing for this project. Their support of the Friendship School Project will encourage school children in Australia and East Timor to develop a better understanding of each other’s cultures and it will be the building blocks for better relations between our countries."

FedEx was the first express company to establish weekday door-to-door express delivery services to the East Timor capital of Dili in February 2003, following the proclamation of Timore Leste (East Timor) as a nation in May 2002. FedEx handles a range of goods for express delivery, from documents to urgent supplies needed by international aid organisations based in the nation.
