FedEx Celebrates New Flights And Opens New Ho Chi Minh Facility

Latest effort to strengthen Vietnam's export industry within Asia and beyond

HONG KONG, February 27, 2000 - FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, today officially opened a new facility in Ho Chi Minh as part of its efforts to support Vietnam's push to become a key export market.

Reflecting the importance of the new development, Mr. David L. Cunningham Jr. President Asia Pacific, stressed that the facility operated by our partner Ho Chi Minh City Post and Telecommunications, would serve as an important link in the integrated express and logistics network that FedEx has established throughout Asia and the world.

"This facility is another way we are helping local companies increase their efficiency and hence, their competitiveness in this global environment", said Mr. Cunningham.

In a move to facilitate exports and help the local economy move ahead, FedEx introduced five-weekly flights into and out of Ho Chi Minh on February 13, making it the first US express carrier to offer dedicated services into and out of Vietnam, operating through VASCO and Corporate Air.

"We are very excited about these developments which will help to significantly enhance our services to our customers but also benefit Vietnam as well. The new flights allow Vietnam's producers better connectivity between all points of Asia via our Hub in Subic Bay and to the US and Europe. This will be the first time that Vietnam has been directly connected to an express transport hub," continued Mr. Cunningham.

"The impending trade agreement between the US and Vietnam will be a positive step towards integrating Vietnam's economy with the global economy. We expect the agreement to stimulate growth in the volume of trade flowing between the two countries. Air express services will be critical to the success of the economy and will help enhance Vietnam's competitiveness in the ASEAN region," said Mr. Cunningham.

"This new facility is instrumental to FedEx in meeting our customers' increasing demand for greater speed and reliability. In addition, the new facility will help FedEx position itself to meet any anticipated increase in cargo traffic between Vietnam and the region," said Mr. Binh Nguyen, Senior Manager, Vietnam.

"This new facility will provide important new workspaces for our employees, customs officers and other Government departments that are involved in the processing of our customers important shipments", Madam Le Thi Minh, Vice Director, Ho Chi Minh City Post and Telecommunications said.

With an area of 2,000 square metres, the facility is able to handle 24,000 packages and documents a month, three times higher than the volume previously handled. The new facility also features in-house customs processing. A total of 85 employees are currently based in the building with 20 vehicles operating full-time from the premises.

FedEx first established operations in Vietnam in 1994 through a business alliance with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Post and Telecommunications, which are under Vietnam Post and Telecommunication. The company has representation in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, Danong and ten large provincial cities across Vietnam.

FedEx Express, a $15 billion subsidiary of FedEx Corp., connects areas that generate 90% of the world's gross domestic product in 24-48 hours with door-to-door, customs-cleared service and a money-back guarantee*. The company's unmatched air route authorities and infrastructure make it the world's largest express transportation company, providing fast, reliable and time-definite transportation of more than 3.3 million items to 210 countries each working day. FedEx employs approximately 149,000 employees and has more than 46,000 drop-off locations, 663 aircraft and 49,000 vehicles in its integrated global network.
