Press Releases
TOKYO, April 22, 1999 - Federal Express Corp. (FedEx), the world's
largest express transportation company, announced today that the
company will introduce a new remote dispatch system, the Digitally
Assisted Dispatch Systems (DADS), to enhance its pick-up and delivery
services for local customers.DADS will utilize the latest telecommunications
infrastructure, DoPa, developed by NTT Docomo.
DADS enables couriers and delivery service agents to upload package
information into the company's centralized mainframe system, COSMOS,
on a real-time basis every time the shipment is scanned.
The company plans to first introduce the new system in the greater
Tokyo area, followed by Western Japan later this year. DADS will
assist FedEx to maintain and enhance efficiencies in pick-up and
delivery operations, as well as further increase service levels
in the area of package tracking.
"DADS is an ideal pick-up/delivery control system that FedEx first
developed for use in the U.S." said David J. Ross, Vice President
of North Pacific Region. "The system will provide our Japanese customers
with even faster and more accurate information on the status of
shipments in the FedEx system."
In addition, DADS, which uses two-way data communications, makes
it possible for couriers to receive pick-up requests from a dispatcher
through a dedicated computer terminal installed in a vehicle. Traditionally,
the dispatcher sent the request to the courier over the wireless
phone.
