Federal Express expands Express Distribution Centre (EDC) network in Asia Pacific Division

More than 20 FedEx EDCs in 10 APAC countries and territories provide increased logistics solutions to international shippers

HONG KONG, May 1, 1998 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) recently announced expansion plans for its Logistics, Electronic Commerce and Catalog (LEC&C) division in the Asia Pacific region, including the opening of two FedEx Express Distribution Centers (EDCs) in China.

Through a contract agreement with U-Freight Holdings Ltd, FedEx's global logistics partner in China, FedEx will open EDCs serving Beijing and Shanghai.

U-Freight is a global transportation service provider that will provide customs clearance, warehousing, domestic distribution and other value added services upon request to our customers. The new EDCs will be fully operational by June this year with each facility occupying more than 5,000 square feet.

To date, FedEx LEC&C has established more than 20 EDCs in 10 countries and territories in the region. Aside from the two in China, there are five in Japan, four in South Korea, three in Singapore, two in Australia and one each in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and New Zealand. FedEx EDCs serve a variety of clients from a multitude of industries including electronics, semi-conductor, medical equipment and fashion apparel.

Plans to open more EDCs in the region are already underway. EDCs in Penang and Kuala Lumpur are scheduled to open in late 1998.

With the signing of the contract, FedEx LEC&C now has a network of EDCs in most major cities in Asia.

"We are extremely excited about this significant development. Literally, this now means that we can meet the needs of customers looking for Asia Pacific-wide logistics solutions," William L. Conley, vice president, FedEx LEC&C, Asia Pacific Division, said.

"Our EDCs are linked to our FedEx AsiaOne network which provides time-certain order fulfilment to our customers. This results in a significant reduction in cycle time while at the same time, reduces overall inventory costs by eliminating costly excess inventory.

"Today's global manufacturers are seeking new distribution, inventory control and warehousing methods that promote speed to market, increase competitiveness, and control costs. The extensive logistics network FedEx now has in Asia can help manufacturers of all sizes from a variety of industries to meet their objectives," Conley added.

FedEx EDCs are specifically designed to handle inventory management and distribution services for high turnover, fast-moving, smaller volume and high-value items. Staff at EDCs receive orders from customers and then move the goods via the fastest and most efficient mode possible. The shipment is then delivered to the end-user, usually within 24 hours or less from the time the order is received.
