FedEx Earns 'Top Supplier' Honour from COMPAQ Computer Corp.

Shippers in Asia to benefit from FedEx technology, supply chain management and slashed delivery time

HONG KONG, May 9, 2001 - FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, is the recipient of the "International Supplier of the Year" award from Compaq Computer Corp. for its stellar performance in managing portable computer shipments in 2000. This is the second major supplier award for FedEx Express since last June, when the company was named "Carrier of the Year" by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Compaq, the world's largest maker of personal computers, chose FedEx Express based on the company's consistent ranking above other transportation suppliers for on-time performance, electronic data interface compliance, claims, costs, service and total tonnage handled. FedEx technology integration with Compaq systems in Asia last year, coupled with FedEx expertise in global supply-chain management, dramatically shortened the delivery cycle of portable computers manufactured by Compaq in Taipei and shipped to the United States. The build-to-delivery process, which took from seven to 10 business days before FedEx began providing supply chain support, was cut to three to four days.

"The ability of FedEx to start up operations, allocate space to Compaq and provide complete in-transit visibility set the company apart as an exceptional transportation supplier," Brian L. Whitlock, global transportation manager for Compaq's North American logistics operations, said.

FedEx, through FedEx International Priority Direct service, manages the pick-up of portable computers from manufacturers in Taipei and delivers them directly to Compaq's retail customers in the United States, eliminating the need for costly warehousing. The FedEx international service enables distribution of shipments from one origin to multiple recipients in a single country through consolidated customs entry.

"The end-to-end tracking visibility that FedEx offers from order placement to product delivery is what purchasers of high-value goods are seeking," David Cunningham, President of Asia Pacific, FedEx Express, said. "Our innovative and reliable integrated system technologies enable us to leverage the leadership and experience we have established in the international market to deliver unmatched solution for Compaq."

Added Mark Patterson, FedEx's vice president of Asia Pacific Sales, "Selection of FedEx as the top international supplier for Compaq is a testament to the customer-driven efforts of FedEx people and functions worldwide. The supplier award further reinforces the leadership position FedEx has in providing a comprehensive portfolio of services that meet fast-cycle supply-chain needs of companies of any size."

FedEx Express, a US$15 billion subsidiary of FedEx Corp., connects areas that generate 90% of the world's gross domestic product in 24-48 hours with door-to-door, customs-cleared service and a money-back guarantee. The company's unmatched air route authorities and infrastructure make it the world's largest express transportation company, providing fast, reliable and time-definite transportation of more than 3.3 million items to 210 countries each working day. FedEx employs approximately 149,000 employees and has more than 46,000 drop-off locations, 663 aircraft and 49,000 vehicles in its integrated global network. The company maintains electronic connections with more than 2.5 million customers via FedEx Powership®, FedEx Ship® and FedEx interNetShip®.
