FedEx and Air New Zealand Form Strategic Alliance

Global Resources and Local Reach Come Together in "Win-Win" for New Zealand Express Transportation Market

HONG KONG, August 6, 1997 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) and New Zealand's major airline, Air New Zealand, announce today that they have forged a strategic alliance. Under the agreement, First Express, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air New Zealand, will provide door-to-door domestic courier services throughout the country on behalf of FedEx.

Details of the alliance were announced by Bruce Meyers, managing director, FedEx Australasia, and Peter Elmsly, general manager, Air New Zealand Cargo, in Auckland, New Zealand.

The alliance is expected to deliver significantly enhanced services to businesses in New Zealand, particularly small to medium-sized exporters. Shippers will now have access to the world's most extensive express transportation network via the FedEx global system connected to 212 countries.

"This is an exceptionally good match, since FedEx offers the most comprehensive range of international express services into and out of New Zealand and First Express has extensive domestic experience," said Meyers. "We are very pleased to align our services with such a strong partner in a country where our business is growing so fast."

Customers of both partners will have the convenience of "one-stop" express transport services. This includes arranging for dispatch for both domestic and international shipments with a single phone call.

"The alliance opens up a whole range of new delivery channels for New Zealand companies exporting and importing goods. FedEx also gains a greatly expanded distribution channel for its international services, as well as significantly enhanced resources and domestic reach in the local market. This is very good news for the local business community which will enjoy the improved service levels resulting from greater competition in the express transportation sector," said Bruce Myers, managing director for FedEx Australasia.

FedEx has provided international express services to a fast-growing customer base in New Zealand since 1991. Since then, the company has experienced significant growth, recording 25 per cent year-over-year increases.

Much of that growth has been attributed to New Zealand's successful export drive in recent years. On an annual basis, FedEx has experienced an increase in the amount of high-value items shipped from the electronics, medical, aircraft and vehicle maintenance industries.

FedEx has increased staff considerably over the previous six years. It has extensive operations in the key centers of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

First Express is one of New Zealand's fastest growing domestic courier companies. Established by Air New Zealand in 1989 as a door-to-door courier service to complement the airline's existing airport-to-airport cargo service, First Express has experienced revenue growth of between 10 to 30 per cent per annum over the past few years. The company currently employs 160 people in 22 offices. It has 120 vehicles, as well as owner-drivers and agents in provincial areas.

FedEx currently serves the Asia Pacific market with approximately 4,300 employees serving more than 30 countries and territories. The company provides the most extensive trans-Pacific air lift of any major competitor. Operating its own wide-bodied MD-11, DC-10 and A310 aircraft, FedEx offers over 250 flights per week to the following locations: Beijing, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Osaka, Penang, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Subic Bay, Taipei, and Tokyo, as well as destinations in the U.S.

Federal Express is the world's largest express transportation company providing fast and reliable services for more than 2.8 million items in 212 countries each working day. The company employs approximately 130,000 people, has nearly 43,000 drop-off locations, and operates more than 580 aircraft and 38,000 vehicles in its integrated global network. FedEx maintains electronic connections with more than 650,000 users via FedEx PowerShip®, FedEx Ship® and FedEx interNetShipSM. Federal Express reported revenues of US$11.5 billion for its fiscal year ended May 31, 1997.
